What conditions are necessary for fertilization to occur?

There are sooooo many different angles to attack this question from. In both mammals and plants you need to have haploid gametes with a DNA content of 1. The gametes must be mature and viable. You also needs a mechanism of bringing them together. Plants use wind or other creatures, but mammals use copulatory organs.
